Why We Use Sodium Hydroxide

All true soap is made using sodium hydroxide (lye). During the soapmaking process, sodium hydroxide reacts with the oils through a process called saponification, creating real soap and naturally occurring glycerin. Once saponification is complete and the soap has cured for 4–6 weeks, no sodium hydroxide remains in the finished bar.
