🧼 Yes, Our Soap Is Made With Lye!

All true soap made through the cold-process method starts with lye. There is no need to be afraid of the word “lye”—it is an essential part of the soap-making process.

During saponification, sodium hydroxide reacts with the oils and fats in the recipe to create soap. When the process is properly completed, the sodium hydroxide has reacted with the oils and is no longer present as lye in the finished bar.

This chemical reaction is what transforms oils and fats into the cleansing, lathering bar of soap you know and love. Our cold-process soaps are then allowed to cure for 4–6 weeks so they can harden, develop a milder feel, and become a long-lasting bar.

What Is Saponification?

Saponification is the chemical reaction that occurs when fats or oils react with a strong alkali, such as sodium hydroxide, to form soap.

The types and proportions of fatty acids in the oils used can influence the finished soap’s hardness, cleansing ability, lather, conditioning properties, and longevity.
