Why Do Our Soaps Contain Lye?

All true soap is made with lye (Sodium Hydroxide). Lye is an essential part of the soap-making process.

During saponification, Sodium Hydroxide combines with the oils and butters to create soap. Once the chemical reaction is complete, the Sodium Hydroxide has been transformed and is no longer present as lye in the finished soap.

That’s why our cold process soaps require a 4–6 week cure time before they are ready to use. This allows the bars to fully harden and develop their wonderful lather and performance.

Saponification is the chemical process in which oils and fats react with a strong base to form the salts of fatty acids that we know as soap. The balance of fatty acids in the oils contributes to the bar’s hardness, cleansing, lather, and conditioning properties.
